Overview
Transmutation allows you to change, or reroll, a mod on a piece of gear. (Note: "mod" is used interchangeably with "treasure effect" and "treasure mod") This consumes phlogiston and durability. The higher the level of the item, the higher the tier of phlogiston consumed. The ability to pick and choose treasure effects is huge, and it's not an understatement to say that this is the most powerful skill for min-maxing gear. Please note that transmuting anything will ATTUNE that gear to you, making it useless to other players.

NOTE: Differences between Transmutation and Augmentation: Transmutation lets you change the mods on your gear, whereas Augmentation lets you add one additional mod to a piece of gear. With Transmutation you distill items into phlogiston and use a transmutation table to make changes. With Augmentation you decompose items into beads and baubles in order to extract a mod from one item and place it on a different item.

Mechanics
Distillation
You can distill non-white items (anything that has a mod) into phlogiston. Each distillation has a chance to consume a Prism, depending on what tier the distilled equipment is.

The quantity of phlog given depends on the tier of the item (Uncommon, Rare, Exceptional, Epic, or Legendary...see Items for a breakdown). Speaking very broadly, Uncommon gives 2 phlog, Rare gives 4-5, Exceptional gives 6-7, Epic gives 8-10, and Legendary gives 12-13.

The tier of phlog (Shoddy, Rough, Crude, Decent, or Nice) depends on the level of the item. Generally, the highest level requirement for the item is used. A sword that requires level 55 Sword and level 30 Psychology would distill into Decent Phlogiston. The table below maps level to phlog tier.

Level Range
Phlog Tier
0-10 || Shoddy
15-25 || Rough
30-40 || Crude
45-55 || Decent
60-70 || Nice

Transmutation
Transmuting an item will change a selected mod to a different, randomly chosen, effect. To do this, find a Transmutation table (list of locations below). Interact with the table, drag an item to it, and choose the mod you wish to reroll. You must unequip gear before transmuting it.

When you select a mod to reroll, you will get a prompt telling you how much phlog and durability will be consumed. Rerolling a mod from a normal combat skill costs 35 phlog and 25% durability. The tier of phlog required depends on the tier level that the mod belongs to, see the chart above for the exact ranges. EX: Rerolling a level 55 sword mod will require 35 Decent Phlogiston.

If you reroll an Endurance or generic mod, the cost is 20 phlog and 20% durability.

All skills have a list of specific mods that are available for each slot (Head, Chest, etc.). The new mod will be chosen from that list, and is guaranteed to NOT be something that is already on the gear. EX: Let's say that there are 10 possible mods for Fire Magic MainHands. Let's say you have 2 Fire Magic mods on your current Staff. If you reroll one of them, there are 8 possible mods it could become.

Due to the random nature of transmutation, it can be very frustrating or very satisfying. You should be aware that you can roll many, many times without getting the mod you want...that's just how luck works.

Bug: After transmuting a mod, you are given the option to try again. IF YOU CLICK TRY AGAIN, YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO BE REROLLING THE SAME MOD. This is because the game generally puts the "new" (rerolled) mod at the bottom of the list, but will try to transmute from the mod's old position if you hit "Try Again". To be safe, it is recommended that you instead choose "All done." and re-drag the item to the transmutation table.

Note: The game will allow you to transmute an augmented mod. Your gear will still be useable, but that piece of equipment will not be un-augmentable. If you try to undo the augment, you'll receive an error message.

Tip: ANY tier of a mod will "block" all tiers of that mod from being rerolled. In other words, if you had "Riposte Damage +11%" (level 5 mod) on your gear, any rerolls on other mods would never result in any tier of "Riposte Damage +X%". This means that you can augment a low-level mod that you do NOT want on your gear to increase your chances of getting the mods you want. Using the example above, say there are 10 possible Fire Magic Staff mods and our gear already has 2 of them. Normally any reroll would be picking from a pool of 8. Instead, before transmuting, say that we augmented a mod that we definitely didn't want the reroll to become. Now you're choosing from a pool of 7. Once you've gotten the mod you want, you simply undo the augment (see Augmentation). This method is definitely a bit more tedious than just transmuting, but may be worth it in terms of time/gold/phlog/prisms saved. Make sure that you do not accidentally transmute the low-level augment, see the Note above.

Durability
Durability is consumed every time you transmute an item. Having 0% durability will NOT stop you from being able to wear and use that gear, but you cannot transmute if you don't have the required durability. You can repair an items durability with Transmutation Recipes, but each one sets a timer on that piece of equipment. That equipment cannot be repaired again until the timer expires. For the max-level repair skill (repairs 100% durability), the timer is 7 days.

Theorycrafting
If you're trying to transmute gear in search of specific mods, you could probably use a list of possible mods for a particular skillset. You can visit Gorgon Explorer for a player-run database of every mod (the Mod and Build Planner tabs are particularly useful). Mods are also available on the wiki at <skill name>/Treasure Effects. (Example: Fire Magic/Treasure Effects)

Along with Augmentation and Shamanic Infusion, Transmutation forms the mechanism for enchanting gear in Project Gorgon.

Transmutation is a skill learned from Makara. Through the use of strange phlogistons, it allows you to change a mod (treasure effect) on a piece of gear. Doing so will attune the item to you and reduce its durability. But don't worry! You can sacrifice prisms to restore durability.

Makara is located slightly off of the default map in Ilmari desert. Because the map does not yet have a graphic, Makara is currently located at a place due south of the space between the words "No" and "Map" on where the map says "No Map Available"

Transmutation versus Augmentation: Transmutation lets you change the treasure effects (mods) on your gear, whereas Augmentation lets you add one additional treasure effect (mod) to a piece of gear. With Transmutation you distill items into phlogiston and use a transmutation table to make changes. With Augmentation you decompose items into beads and baubles in order to extract a mod from one item and place it on a different item.

The transmutation process summarized:

Step 1) First, using Transmutation recipes, you "distill" pieces of gear that you don't need into "phlogiston" (these items are destroyed - so make sure you only distill items you don't want!)
* Note that distilling items yields different qualities of phlogiston: shoddy, rough, crude, decent, and nice. Depending on the level of the item you want to transmute/change, you will need a particular type.

Step 2) After you have enough phlogiston saved up, you go to a transmutation table (one is located near Marna in Serbule and another in Rahu). The table will prompt you for the item that you want to enchant/change.

Step 3) You will then be able to view which treasure effects (mods) you can change, as well as the amount of phlogiston one "re-roll" change will require. Generally, you can choose to re-roll to a generic mod (+ armor, health, inventory etc.) OR a class-specific mod (fire magic, necromancy, psychology, etc.)
* When you roll a mod, it is RANDOMLY chosen from a fixed pool of mods available for each gear slot. You can visit www.gorgonexplorer.com (spoilers) for a player-run database of every mod to really customize and perfect your build.

Step 4) For each change you make, your item's durability will be reduced by 20-25%. All items start with 100% durability, so you basically get 4-5 transmutation table rolls before you need to repair the item. *** You can still use/equip the item even if it has 0% durability; you just won't be able to use the transmutation table again to make further changes until you repair the item.
* The "Repair" durability recipes require prisms (see Augmentation for more info on acquiring prisms) and you can only repair an item a certain amount of times per week.

Shamanic infusion is similar to Augmentation in that it allows you to add one magical effect to a piece of gear. However, Shamanic infusion is much simpler: there are fixed recipes and each one provides a predetermined magical effect (example: +armor, +sprint speed, +unarmed damage). Each recipe requires basic animal parts that can be found on monsters located throughout Alharth. (Augmentation, on the other hand, is more complex and involves removing a magical effect/mod from one piece of gear and adding it to a different piece of gear. Therefore, Shamanic Infusion offers a great way for lower and mid-level players to quickly add enhancements to their gear without going through the full Augmentation process.)

* Note that distilling items yields different qualities of phlogiston: shoddy, rough, crude, decent, and nice. Depending on the level of the item you want to transmute/change, you will need a particular type. When you place your item on the transmutation table, it will tell you exactly which kind you need. Furthermore, the "Repair" durability recipes require prisms (see Augmentation for more info on acquiring prisms) and you can only repair an item a certain amount of times per week.

Transmutation lets you change the treasure effects (mods) on your gear, whereas Augmentation lets you add one additional treasure effect (mod) to a piece of gear. With Transmutation you distill items into phlogiston and use a transmutation table to make changes. With Augmentation you decompose items into beads and baubles in order to extract a mod from one item and place it on a different item.

Augmentation Skills
: Learn from Poe in the Myconian Cave. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Toolcrafting.
; Weapon Augmentation
: Learn from Malgath in the Wolf Cave. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Blacksmithing.
; Armor Augmentation
: Learn from Syndra in a barn in central Kur Mountains. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Leatherworking.
; Ancillary-Armor Augmentation
: Learn from Gribburn in the basement of Hogan's Keep. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Tailoring.

Learning Augmentation
Learning augmentation is a multi-step process. Visit Nightshade at the Kur Mt. Outpost to begin a series of quests that allow you to augment gear. There are four subcategories of augmentation taught by the following NPCs:

• Syndra in Kur Mts--Armor (chest and legs)

• Gribburn in Eltibule--Ancillary Armor (boots and helm)

• Poe in Serbule--Jewelry (neck and ring)

• Malgath in Kur Mts--Weapon (mainhand, offhand and gloves)

Some challenges must be completed before receiving skills from these sub-trainers. For example, Malgath is reached after defeating multiple Wolf Cave mobs; Poe is in an obscure corner of Myconian cave; Gribburn requires learning Goblinese and gaining favor with Hogan; and Syndra requires resolving a problem.

To learn Weapon Augmentation, for example, a player travels to Malgath in the Wolf Cave and gains his favor in order to train the first level skill called "Decompose Main Hand Weapon". This skill will allow the player to take any enchanted (green or above) main hand weapon and break it down into "beads". The level and rarity of the weapon determine how many beads the player receives. Decomposition also occasionally results in the creation of a Prism, which are reagents used in Transmutation.

Using Augmentation
Weapon Augmentation teaches the player to extract "mods" from weapons. Extracting a specific mod effect costs beads. The crafting menu says it costs up to one bead per level of the effect(e.g. a staff that requires level 60 fire magic would cost up to 60 beads for a successful extraction of a fire magic effect).

Extracting a specific effect requires a "crystal" as well. Putting the wrong type of crystal(e.g. using a redwall crystal because they're more readily available) will result in the item and crystal being destroyed, and the player will receive a message stating that they used the wrong type of crystal.

Using the right type of crystal requires matching up a specific gem's primary and/or secondary effect with the effect of the item. These effects are notated on the gems page.

For instance, extracting a psychology effect from a sword, the player uses tourmaline as the crystal in the extract augment recipe. The weapon and crystal are both destroyed in the process, but create an augment that can be placed on another weapon. The player's augmentation skill level determines the success of the extraction; the skill level should be within 10 levels of the weapon's level.(A level N player has a 100% chance of extracting a level N+10 power, but only a 10% chance of extracting a level N+20 power, and a 0% chance of extracting anything higher.) If you fail to extract an augment, the item is lost anyway. Even if the weapon and crystal are destroyed, the player still receives Weapon Augmentation experience

Assuming everything went right, the player receives an augment new example which can be applied to a different weapon. (In the past, augmentation resulted in oils, which are no longer used in the mechanic.)

Applying Augmentation
The next step of augmentation is applying the extracted mod to another item. The attachment skills are learned from Nightshade once you have sufficient favor. The recipes for attaching items fall under the lore skill-line. The recipe uses a reagent specific to the type of augment--a ring or neck augment requires an ectoplasm for example. You can apply one augment to an item using the lore recipe. For additional enchanting options, please see Transmutation.

The transmutation process summarized:

Step 1) First, using Transmutation recipes, you "distill" pieces of gear that you don't need into "phlogiston" (these items are destroyed - so make sure you only distill items you don't want!)

Step 2) After you have enough phlogiston saved up, you go to a transmutation table (one is located near Marna in Serbule, and another in Rahu). The table will prompt you for the item that you want to enchant/change.

Step 4) For each change you make, your item's durability will be reduced by 20-25%. All items start with 100% durability, so you basically get 4 transmutation table re-rolls before you need to repair the item.

Note that distilling items yields different qualities of phlogiston: shoddy, crude, decent, and nice. Depending on the level of the item you want to transmute/re-roll, you will need a particular type. When you place your item on the transmutation table, it will tell you exactly which type you need.
