Overview
Geology allows the collection of gems which are used for crafting and the teleportation skill. In order to raise this skill a player must first obtain the associated Surveying skill from Jaime Fatholm, and use a Mineral Survey.
* Mineral Surveys are named for both a region and color of gemstone. A Eltibule Orange Mineral Survey must be used in Eltibule and will only reward standard gems tagged with :Category:Items/OrangeCrystal. Some gems are less common than others, for example Obsidians are not as common when making Blue Mineral Surveys.
* Speed bonus gems can be obtained if you collect another gem deposit shortly after collecting a previous gem deposit. Speed bonus loot table is based on the location and include some of the rarest gems in game.
* Gems are used in various crafting recipes to create Enchanted equipment. They are placed into the Primary Crystal and Secondary Crystal slots as a method to determine what skills equipment will have when crafted.
* Many NPCs like minerals as favor. Some will prefer specific gems, some will like colors categories, and a few will accept any of them.
* Blue Mineral Surveys leading to Amethysts and Green Mineral Surveys leading to Aquamarines are quite popular due to their use in Teleportation.
Geology Mechanics
Types of Minerals and Common Terminology
The Geology skill aids in the collection of multiple types of mineral items. Every Gem is a Crystal but not every Crystal is a Gem.
* Agate is both a Gem and a Crystal.
* Rubywall Crystal is a Crystal but not a Gem.
* Glowy Yellow Crystal is an Irradiated Crystal. Although these are a type of Crystal, they sometimes require Mining or Foraging to gather. This type can sometimes be hazardous to carry.
* Cow Malachite is an Attuned Gem crafted through a Sigil Scripting recipe.
* Maximized Sardonyx is a Catalyst Gem crafted through Geology.
* Sapphire is an "Ilmari Gem," a name given to a group of ten gems added at the same time as the Ilmari zone. Ilmari Gems are often obtained as a Speed Bonus through Surveying.

Collecting gems and crystals is often accomplished through the use of Mineral Surveys crafted through Surveying. Once crafted, a specific level of Geology is required to understand each map.

Speed Bonus
If you collect another survey shortly after collecting a previous survey, then you can obtain a speed bonus. While most can be obtained at any location, the amount varies based on the survey location and some gems are more likely to be found at a given location as shown in table below.

Crafting with Gems
Gems are used in various crafting recipes to create Enchanted equipment. Gems can be placed into the Primary Crystal and Auxiliary Crystal slots in a recipe to determine what skills an item will have when crafted.
* Goshenite and Sunstone are two Ilmari Gems which are intended to generate Generic treasure effects (All_Skills/Treasure_Effects). (Confirmed by Citan in Game_updates/2018-06-20).
* Danburite can currently be used for Endurance treasure effects (Endurance/Treasure_Effects), possibly including extraction of augments. Needs confirmation.
* Opal, Goshenite, Danburite, Tiger's Eye, Turquoise, Emerald, Sunstone, and Morganite are eight Ilmari Gems used in Saddlery recipes.
* Ruby and Sapphire are the only Ilmari Gems currently not used in Saddlery.
* Amethyst and Aquamarine are used in Teleportation.
* Diamond is useful for resurrection abilities through First Aid as well as Necromancy recipes.
* Dye Making uses gemstones, including the Ilmari Gems, in the creation of specific dyes.

* The other "Ilmari" gems and Rubywall Crystals are currently set to Generic modsNeeds confirmation .
Overview
Surveying is a skill that produces surveys that lead to gems and minerals. Creating surveys increases the Surveying skill, while using the surveys increases Geology (mineral surveys) or Mining (mining surveys).

In-Game Description
Analyzing the land to locate valuable resources or important locations. Surveying has many uses, but is most commonly used to make resource maps for Geology and Mining.

Training
<!-- A list of methods to learn and level the skill -->
* Jaime Fatholm will teach you surveying when you become Comfortable with her. This can be done by completing her 2 initial favors. Once she's Comfortable with you, Jaime will give you a few starting ingredients and teach you the recipe for Serbule Rubywall Crystal Survey and Serbule Hills Rubywall Crystal Survey. In the Recipe window, you can see that they require 1 Simple Parchment, 1 Basic Ink, and 1 Rubywall Crystal (only a 20% chance to consume the Crystal). The parchment and ink can be bought from Jaime.

: Once you get all three ingredients you can create a map by pushing the 'Survey' button on the recipe. The survey map will be placed in your inventory. You will need to be in the area (ie. Serbule or Serbule Hills) for which you want to create a survey.

* Urzab in Amulna will unlock levels 51-60 and teaches 51+ recipes. He also unlocks levels 61-70 and teaches recipes of those levels.
* Dachak the Digger unlocks 71-80.
* Glowing Sphere in the Yeti Cave is willing to teach surveying recipes for Kur Mountains to travelers willing to help out with a task.
:: Level 15
:; Foraging
:: Level 40
:; Geology
:: Level 10

Mechanics
Using A Basic Survey
Right click a survey in your inventory and a little red spot will temporarily blink on the minimap (it can be difficult to see if it is on a bright area, it seems to blend in). An on screen message will also give you approximate distances, though it is less practical. It can also help to enlarge your map window, by dragging the lower right corner.

Once you are near enough to the location indicated by the red spot (inside the 100x100 meter box around the treasure), you click the survey map again, and you will get your crystal or mining reward. At that time you will also get XP in either Geology or Mining, depending on the kind of survey.

Getting attacked while trying to use a survey will cancel it and force you to re-click, so try to kill any annoying mobs around you first.

Tip: A common technique for running multiple surveys is to sort the maps by the "quadrant" they're in on the map, and then run through each quadrant! Another helpful technique can be to mark the (closest) survey destinations with a Pin (Point of Interest dot) on the map; Once you are close to the dot you can right click the surveys to see if you are close enough. (Note be sure to remove the Pin after you collected the survey).

Speed Bonus
Whenever you finish a survey, a short timer starts. If you finish another survey within that time, you are rewarded with a speed bonus that gives you random minerals, ores, or other ingredients. The pool of random options depends on what zone you are in and what type of survey you're doing (mineral or mining). For example, completing a mineral survey in Serbule will be more likely to reward green or blue minerals, while Eltibule will likely reward orange and white. If you want to take advantage of the bonus, it is recommended to create a few Surveys, take a look at their locations, and plan which one should be done first, second, third, etc. in fast succession.

For Serbule and Eltibule, the timer is randomly chosen from a number between 1.5-3.5 minutes. In Kur, it's 2.5-4.5.

Mining Speed Bonuses
Map Type !! Possible Speed Bonus
Serbule Hills Simple Mining Survey || Simple Metal Slab Basic Metal Slab Good Metal Slab Expert-Quality Metal Slab Copper Ore Gold Nugget Silver Ore Rubywall Crystal Pyrite Fire Dust
Eltibule Good Mining Survey || Simple Metal Slab Basic Metal Slab Good Metal Slab Masterwork Metal Slab Copper Ore Gold Nugget Flinty Rock Tungsten Pyrite Fire Dust

Mineral Speed Bonuses
For mineral (gem) maps, the speed bonus is determined by location
Location !! Bonus
Serbule Hills<br>Serbule || Blue or Green Gems, Pieces of Green Glass and, more rarely, 'Ilmari' gems
Eltibule<br>Kur || Orange or White Gems and, more rarely, 'Ilmari' gems. Bonus Ilmari gems - poor return in Eltibule; best return is Kur Green surveys.

Using A Motherlode Map
Motherlode maps are more difficult than normal surveys, but give much greater rewards. When you use them, no red dot will appear on your minimap, and won't be given the exact location. You'll only be told the distance to the motherlode. If you're 1000 meters away, the motherlode could be on any point in the 1000-radius circle around you. When you find the motherlode, you'll be rewarded with 15-30 slabs, with a mean of 22 per motherlode survey.

Motherlode bonus ores
When you complete a motherlode survey you will receive slabs plus a bonus of a small amount of ore, slabs, dust, or other materials. The following table shows which materials you are likely to receive, arranged approximately from most likely to least likely.
