Combat Refresh
Levels & Skills
*A short explanation: (see Level for a thorough walk-through)
**Most MMORPGs use a numeric Level system to indicate the power of players, NPCs, and mobs. Project Gorgon does not do this. Skills begin at level 0, and do not show in the player's skill panel. To get level 1 (and a usable skill), the player will need to find the appropriate NPC/quest or item that teaches/gives the skill they desire.

*Skills
**These are what players use as abilities/skill/attributes that allows them to accomplish things in the game world. See:skills
**In Project Gorgon skills are increased by using them, so the more a player uses a specific skill the higher their level will be in that skill.
**It is important to note that if active skill levels are too far apart (more than 25 levels), abilities that are above the 25 level difference are grayed out on the skill bars and unavailable for use. The player simply needs to select lower level abilities in the skill in order to use the same abilities.
**To change active skills (archery, sword, necro, etc) click the arrow button that is on the left side of the skill bar you would like to change.

*Combat Level:
**A player has two combat-abilities they can bring to a fight, each with their own skill level, as well as the armor items that the player has equipped, this leads to a, hmm, 'hazy' view on what the effective level a player really is in combat. Generally players are considered on the levels of their two currently equipped skills with the assumption that they have equipment that is reasonably close to their skill's levels. NPC Foes are judged on a case-by-case basis, with none really having at true 'level', the player will have to make an educated guess by looking at the mob's stats, again see Level for complete details.

*First time's the charm
**Most events in the game reward bonus XP the first time you complete them. This applies to using recipes in various Trade Skills, to eating all types of foods (Gourmand), slaying foes (both common and bosses), dying in different ways, and even Binding yourself to a Teleportation Circle!

Death
*Death is a unique and new experience in PG for most experienced MMO players for a few reasons.
*Death is a skill, as in, each death is unique and each time a player dies they get experience in the Death skill that does in fact give bonuses to some attributes and other useful abilities...
*The game does have a Death Penalty, but only when fighting bosses. When a player falls in combat to a boss they will be cursed with that boss' unique curse, and the curses effects vary, from mildly amusing to being downright unpleasant. The player is then stuck with the curse until they defeat or find some other way to remove the curse.
*Otherwise when a player just dies, for whatever reason, they respawn at the entrance to the zone that they are in.
*One last Note on Death, it is possible for there to be a Death Penalty at all times, players who enjoy this type of play style can check out Hardcore Mode.
**To activate a player must interact with the sign in Serbule Keep, and it is 100% voluntary.

}}TOCright
Introduction
Welcome to the new players guide! Here we will attempt to give you a running start at playing Project Gorgon while showing you how and where to find things on the wiki. A few things to keep in mind, Project:Gorgon(PG) is a game under development and because of that changes will occur (fast and often at times). Don't be alarmed if something doesn't work, just send a bug report and continue on, things are improving all the time and every reported bug helps.

Project: Gorgon is a game that will give YOU the tools that YOU need, give advice, and tell YOU where to go or what YOU need to do to complete whatever task you want you have in mind, but it will not hand it to you. It leaves it to the player to find the tool, the quest/advice giver and whatever else the player might need. So then, players should keep in mind that most NPC talk is laced with hints and will be useful for something. So be prepared to go backtracking and searching the wiki if you are a habitual text window closer! (Hint: We all do it.)

Next! If PG gives a warning about a boss or skill or whatever it may be: Believe it. The warnings are there for a reason and may cause permanent changes to the player's character that cannot be reversed. That being said...
Exploration is a major theme in PG, discover new places, new skills, new enemies, and discover new people, because PG aims so that that there will have plenty of content for everyone to explore and enjoy at all stages of the game. We ask players to be considerate to others that may not know or not have discovered as much in the game. Everyone wants to have the thrill of discovering something new, so please try not to shout out spoilers if possible.

Extras
*Make sure to pick up all harvestables like mushrooms even if they don't seem useful yet. Leveling Foraging will unlock Seek Objective at level 5 which is an ability that will orient your character to face in the direction where your currently active quest objective is! (think "tracking" in good ol' EverQuest).

*Picking mushrooms does in fact NOT raise the Foraging skill, only the Mycology skill.

*When exiting noobie island you may notice a circle patch of low level mushrooms to the left of you, they respawn often and usually contain enough mushrooms to get 16-18.

*If you desire to raise your Fishing skill the best place to start is the moat around Serbule. Start with Crabs until you reach the level required for Clown Fish, from there it is mostly collecting a mixture of Crab, Clown Fish and Grapefish. Perch and Eel are very rare to find and are not optimal for leveling.

*The road east of Serbule is where most Pigs spawn. They are easy to kill and always drop Pork Shoulder. Pork Shoulder is extremely important for raising Joehs Favor fast.
Marna is a shopkeeper in the main town of Serbule. She is a special merchant NPC in that she will buy "almost anything at full value". As you raise favor with her, her money pool will increase so your weekly sales limit will increase.

Presumably she is there to smooth the experience for new players (editor's guess), however new players will quickly run her dry and then will have to wait seven days before her money regenerates. It is recommended that you sell only things to her which you really couldn't sell elsewhere, so that you make the most of her weekly gold amount. See the merchants guide.

Soot: Added info to "Looting enemies!" section

TOCright
This page is meant to be an introduction to combat mechanics in Project: Gorgon.

Armor, Health and Power
Armor
Armor mitigates 1 point of damage for every 25 points of armor remaining.

Health
Health can be topped up with Potions during combat.

Combat abilities also can heal over time (see Mentalism) or heal by a flat amount.

Power
Power is consumed by using abilities that have a Power cost (most skills include emergency abilities that have no Power requirement, typically with a longer cooldown). The amount of Power available and your ability to recover Power between encounters is significant if you hope to take on more than one enemy at once, or even solo dungeons.

Power can be topped up with potions, which is relatively useful in some situations. The basic ability Dig Deep, which can be placed on the sidebar, can also be used to restore Power (albeit with a long reuse time). Lastly Power regeneration can be enhanced in combat through Mentalism abilities.

Damage
Damage and Health damage are not the same. Health damage bypasses armor.

Effect of equipment
Soon enough you'll find that equipment has a significant impact on your total damage output and survivability. This seems obvious for an MMO but in Project: Gorgon equipment with bonuses that augment specific abilities is very common. For example "every time you use your Sword Parry ability, regain 10 Health". This type of ability enhancing mods would be found in raid gear in other MMOs.

You character becomes much more powerful once you have multiple pieces of equipment (weapons, armor, amulet) that enhance your choice of skills along with useful ability enhancing mods. Thus committing to your skill choices is important. While you can easily switch between skills, you'll find that even skills of the same level can vary greatly in damage potential unless you also switch your equipment.

Critical damage
Items sometimes have +xx% to Critical Damage. The default critical damage (not crit. chance) seems to be 125%.

Critical Damage gear is quite uncommon. Archery gear seems to get more of it.

Regeneration in and out of combat
Sitting does not accelerate your out-of-combat regeneration unlike in some veteran MMOs. You'll want to find various foods, drinks and snacks to top up your Health and Power between fights.

Regeneration appears to "tick" once every four seconds (so if a food says "+5 Health per update" it means +5 Health every 4 seconds).

Some combat skills such as Mentalism also provide Health, Power and Armor regeneration. Some of the abilities are group-oriented, other abilities are self-help (for example Positive Attitude will quickly restore a small amount of Armor, Health and Power).

In-combat regeneration from foods or drinks is a rarer commodity. There are in-combat Power or Health regeneration potions that can be bought from NPCs or crafted. They tend to be very pricey, and of course have a fairly limited duration.

If you "mezz" a creature for long enough (eg. Tell Me About Your Mother, the "In combat" indicator will disappear and one update of out of combat regeneration will happen, even though the creature is still aggressive.

Foods
Most types of regenerative foods and drinks are crafted or bought. Exceptions are the Mogyar Cheese which drops from Giant Rat, and Milk which can be obtained from the Cows in Serbule with an empty bottle. These are non-negligible sources of Power regeneration which can be very helpful to new players.

Buffs
Typically one food, one snack, one drink, and one flower can be stacked. However this is still very much in development. It seems that foods provide Health and Power, while drinks provide only Power. Both can be stacked. Flowers provide a max power bonus (right-click them).

For people specialised in Sword combat, the Calligraphy skill offers a temporary effects that allows for special combinations. Similarly the Meditation skill offers temporary effects for people specialised in Unarmed combat.

Rage and special attacks
Rage is the energy source that powers monsters’ special attacks. As you hit monsters or they hit you, they gather Rage, and when their meter is full (an orange looking hand), they user their super power.

Many player skills, like Sword and Psychology, have abilities that hamper monster Rage. For example Psychoanalyse will slow down the rate at which the enemy builds rage, while Sword Parry will reduce the enemy's rage by a flat amount.

An enemy's special attacks will be revealed to the player in the target window when the relevant Anatomy skill is of sufficient level (ie. by fighting this type of creature long enough).

You can tell when an enemy uses a special attack by the overhead icon.

Movement and kiting
In a game like this, where you can find all kinds of clever ways to stack speed buffs, it’s possible to run extremely fast. This is a problem in a combat, where the players can be much more mobile than the monsters.

One way the game currently addresses this is that you can not “sprint” backwards, just walk backwards. So if you want to get away quickly, you have to turn around.

Kiting is something the devs want to address eventually, although it is intended to allow some amount of kiting — "archers should be able to move and get a few extra attacks in".

Vulnerability
Monsters periodically go into this vulnerable state, and some attacks do extra damage against vulnerable monsters, so it’s sort of a whack-a-mole mechanic — you use your vuln-boost ability when you see the monster flashing vulnerable.

A big red glowing thing happens when the monster is vulnerable, plus it makes a sound.

An icon flashes over the monster’s head when they’re vulnerable, and the tutorial cave has an explanatory tip about this (when you get your first Sword ability that does extra vuln damage).

Looting enemies!
Loot appears at the top of the loot window and can be picked up via either double-clicking the icon, or by using the Loot All button. Not all creatures will have loot.

If you have the right equipment, you may also have the option to perform an autopsy, skin, butcher, extract a skull, and bury the creature. Some creatures can be skinned but not butchered, and vice versa. To have a chance (20%) of extracting an organ, you will need an Organ Knife.

Note that to skin or butcher an animal, you will need to have a free inventory space, even if the yielded item is stackable and already present in your inventory.

Also note that the butchering knife and skinning knife are distinct items, and do not overlap in features. You must have both in your inventory. There is a "multi-purpose" knife, but it has less bonuses than the highest quality butcher and skinning knives.

When an enemy is slain and it drops special loot (cyan, yellow, purple colour), there is a distinctive sound and a particle effect.
Quest window
The Quest window actually features three tabs that can be easily missed:

* Quests and Favors: Your typical quest log. As of the alpha it currently does not distinguish completed quests. However, a notification appears on the screen along with a distinctive sound whenever you progress on a quest objective.
* Stuff to Do : Provides a list of objectives with basic hints. This is a nice feature for players who want to try and discover a lot on their own. Note that many of those objectives are out of the reach of a new player and will require some time to complete!
* Notepad : An easily missed feature, the notepad lets you jot down notes in-game. This can be useful to remember Words of Power that you may want to use later, and can be useful to remember key information for several quests. Note that there is NOT a Control-Z (undo) feature, so be careful.

Inventory
The Inventory window can be resized however you want. The size of the items can be changed via Options > GUI and Windows > Inventory Item Icon Size.

As your character grows, you will gain additional Inventory slots through skills like Endurance (permanent), through certain recipes (this appears to be a temporary effect), and sometimes granted by item properties (also temporary).

The Sort option can be useful because the game currently does not allow to reorganize your backpack contents by drag and drop. The sort option will place all combat gear first (armor and weapons), which makes it easier to switch between weapons and armor as you switch between skills. Sometimes it can be useful also to drop items on the ground, then quickly pick them up, as this will move them to the end of the inventory. It is also possible to exchange the position of items, by dragging one item onto another.

The items in your inventory with the red E are the ones that you have currently equipped, items with red borders are quest items.

To drop an item click and drag the item onto the panel below that appears below the inventory. Be aware that any items dropped in this way can be picked up by players nearby!

To split a stack of items left click the item while holding the shift key.

Buying and selling
Press shift when buying to buy more than one unit of an item at once.

Press shift when selling to sell a single item instead of the whole stack.

Map
Press M or use the button on the sidebar to open the map. The map of the area you are in can be resized. Currently, not all locations have maps.

You can place markers on the map, for places of interest you may want to remember (this can also be useful for planning a route among multiple mining surveys). The markers can be renamed or removed by clicking on them.

Grouping
After inviting someone to a group (party) with you (and them accepting), or after inviting a group-invitation yourself, you can open the Social window, to see who is grouped with you. This also allows you to see their armor and health (some classes have abilities that allow them to heal other players).

The chat window
Slash commands are typed in the console. These always start with a forward slash (EG. "/wiki").

Linking items in chat
To link items in chat, simply drag and drop one or more items to the chat window while you have a message typed.

Ghost-chat
To enable ghost chat simply click the little red cross. That is, click the close button instead of using the chat toggle key. From there on, the chat will only appear when someone talks, and will disappear again after a few seconds. In addition, the chat appears somewhat transparent. It reduces clutter and adds a little to immersion. You can configure how long the ghost-chat should last in Options > GUI and Windows, along with the transparency level.

Chat rooms
You can create and join chat rooms. Users automatically start in the "Trade" and "Help" channels. You can:

/join -Custom1 || Joins/creates the private chat room "Custom1". Anyone can still join it, but it won't show up under /rooms.
/rooms || Displays a list of public chat rooms.
/leave Custom1 || Leaves a chat room.

Social
The default message mode is shown left of the place where you type messages. Left click it to cycle between 'GLOBAL', 'NEARBY' and 'GROUP'.

Hello. I am Soot in-game. First tried the game sometime in 2015 (or 2014?), but just recently started playing again (In March, 2016) and love it!

I will probably mainly contribute via grammar fixes and such, but might add some information as I learn more about the game.

Soot: Edited entire page for grammar, consistency, and clarity. Added some information here and there.

TOCright
Quest window
The Quest window actually features three tabs that can be easily missed:

* Quests and Favors: Your typical quest log. As of the alpha it currently does not distinguish completed quests. However, a notification appears on the screen along with a distinctive sound whenever you progress on a quest objective.
* Stuff to Do : Provides a list of objectives with basic hints. This is a nice feature for players who want to try and discover a lot on their own. Note that many of those objectives are out of the reach of a new player and will require some time to complete!
* Notepad : An easily missed feature, the notepad lets you jot down notes in-game, this can be useful to remember Words of Power that you may want to use later, and can be useful to remember key information for several quests.

You can:

style="min-width:120px;"| /join Custom1 || Joins the room "Custom1". If no one is in that channel, it will create it for you.
/join -Custom1 || Joins/creates the private chat room "Custom1". Anyone can still join it, but it won't show up under /rooms.
/rooms || Displays a list of public chat rooms.
/leave Custom1 || Leaves a chat room.

Social
The default message mode is shown left of the place where you type messages. Left click it to cycle between 'GLOBAL', 'NEARBY' and 'GROUP'.
