Overview
Augmentation is not a skill itself, but an important mechanic, with 4 different secondary Augmentation skills. It can be confusing at first; Augmentation as a mechanic involves breaking down Magic gear for materials, Extracting Treasure Effects from existing gear into Augments, and Applying these Augments to different pieces of gear in order to add the extracted mods. There are 4 different types of Augmentation: Weapon (which includes Gloves), Jewelry, Armor (Chest and Legs), and Ancillary-Armor (Helms and Boots). Each one is a skill with levels and experience that breaks down different gear types, and each is leveled independently.

While Transmutation lets you change the treasure effects (mods) on your gear, Augmentation lets you add one additional treasure effect (mod) to a piece of gear. With Transmutation, you distill items into Phlogiston and use a transmutation table to make changes. With Augmentation, you decompose items into beads (weapons and gloves), ornaments (jewelry), baubles (chest and legs), and contraptions (helms and boots), in order to extract a mod from one item and place it onto a different item.

Along with Transmutation and Shamanic Infusion, Augmentation forms the mechanism for enchanting gear in Project Gorgon.

In addition to its use in player-crafting, augments can also be found in monster loot and applied to equipment by NPCs.

For additional information, see the Lorebook <span class="extimage32px">Teleportation For Beginners</span> Augments for Everyone.

Learning Augmentation
Learning augmentation is a multi-step process. Visit Nightshade at the Kur Mountains Outpost to begin a series of quests that allow you to augment gear. There are four subcategories of augmentation taught by the following NPCs:

Training
:: Weapon Augmentation - Main hand Augments, Glove Augments, and Off-Hand Augments
::: Learn from Malgath in the Wolf Cave. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Blacksmithing.
:: Jewelry Augmentation - Neck Augments and Ring Augments
::: Learn from Poe in the Myconian Cave. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Toolcrafting.
:: Armor Augmentation - Chest Augments and Leg Augments
::: Learn from Syndra in a barn in central Kur Mountains. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Leatherworking.
:: Ancillary-Armor Augmentation - Helm Augments and Boot Augments
::: Learn from Gribburn in the basement of Hogan's Keep. Requires 25 Alchemy, 25 Tailoring.

Some challenges must be completed before receiving skills from these sub-trainers. For example, Malgath is reached after defeating multiple Wolf Cave mobs; Poe is in an obscure corner of Myconian cave; Gribburn requires learning Goblinese and gaining favor with Hogan; and Syndra requires resolving a problem.

To learn Weapon Augmentation, for example, a player travels to Malgath in the Wolf Cave and gains his favor in order to train the first level skill called "Decompose Main Hand Weapon".

Using Augmentation
Decomposing Items
Decomposing uncommon or higher rarity items breaks them down into beads, ornaments, baubles, or contraptions, depending on item type (e.g. decomposing Level 1-30 jewelry produces Small Ring Ornaments or Small Necklace Ornaments). These constituent materials are then used when extracting or undoing augments. Decomposing may also yield Prism, used in Transmutation. The type (size) and quantity of materials received depend on the level and rarity of the item being decomposed.
Decomposition Experience Points
The amount of experience received in the relevant Augmentation skill depends on the level range of the item decomposed, not the rarity. E.g., decomposing an 1 level 5 ring will yield the same amount of Jewelry Augmentation xp as a 5 level 30 ring, but (substantially) less than an 1 level 35(-60) ring needs confirmation.
{| class = "wikitable"
| 1-30 || 50
|-
| 61-90 || 3200

Extracting Augments
Augmentation skills also allow you to extract "mods" from that specific equipment type. As an example, Weapon Augmentation teaches the player to extract mods from weapons (and gloves). Extracting a specific mod effect requires materials gained during the Decompose process. This material is specific to the equipment type. Weapons, as an example, give beads, while jewelry gives ornaments. The exact material for each augment extraction is listed on the respective skill's wiki page. An extraction takes 20 of the required material (e.g. 20 beads).

Extracting a specific effect requires a "crystal" as well. Putting the wrong type of crystal (e.g. using a redwall crystal because they're more readily available) will result in the item and crystal being destroyed, and the player will receive a message stating that they used the wrong type of crystal.

Using the right type of crystal requires matching up a specific gem's primary and/or secondary effect with the effect of the item. These effects are notated on the gems page.

For instance, extracting a psychology effect from a sword, the player uses tourmaline as the crystal in the extract augment recipe. The weapon and crystal are both destroyed in the process, but create an augment that can be placed on another weapon.

Assuming everything went right, the player receives an augment which can be applied to a different main-hand weapon.

Applying Augments
The next step of augmentation is applying the extracted mod to another item. The attachment skills are learned from Nightshade once you have sufficient favor. The recipes for attaching items fall under the Lore skill-line.

Applying an augment to an item costs 100 Enhancement Points on the item, which is max points for normal loot items (120 for crafted). Therefore you can apply only one augment to an item. Other uses for Enhancement Points include Shamanic Infusion, the addition of Pockets to chest/leg armor (Tailoring for cloth and leather or Blacksmithing for metal and organic) and various other improvements such as additional armor through reinforcing (Blacksmithing) or additional damage of a particular element (Tailoring).

Note that applying an augment will bind the item to your account. Despite the item text reading that the item is bound to the character that augmented it, your other characters will be able to equip it. You can (currently) not augment an item that is bound to another character on your account. If you want to augment items without using the NPC install service, you should make sure that all items are bound to the character that can apply augments, by using that character to transmute the item for the first time (other characters can then transmute the item without rebinding).
Undoing Augments
Only one augment can be added to an item at any one time. If you want to undo an augment applied to a piece of gear, use the appropriate "undo" recipe, for example "Undo Augment on Helm" in Ancillary-Armor Augmentation/Recipes. These undo augment recipes can also be used to undo Shamanic Infusions.

Undoing an augment always uses small materials (e.g. Small Shoe Contraption), regardless of the level of the mod being undone or the level of the item. Undoing an augment consumes 25 of the small material.
Augmentation Loot
Augment-Installation Services
Some NPCs can now (since June 2018) install Augments for you! By using one of these NPCs, you do not need to have learned the various Augment Installation recipes from Nightshade. Learning Nightshade's recipes will eventually be a cost-savings for max-level players who do a lot of augment-installing, but at the current max level of 80, most players will find it cheaper to use these NPCs.
The following NPCs can install Augments for you:
{{ #dpl:
| category = Augmentation
| include = {NPC infobox}:zone,#Augmentation,
Overview
Goblinese is the language spoken by goblins. The language lets you speak to friendly goblins, some of which train abilities and even teach new skills! Fluency in Goblinese level (35) is all that is required to talk to all goblins except Glajur level (40) though they may have other requirements to learn from them.
* Serbule Hills has 3 large concentrations of goblins - Starting in the North-East with the Lumbermill, then if you follow the Eastern Zone wall down there is another large concentration at the Farm, and then another in the South-East around Catapults.
* Occasionally you can find the cards in Yetta's used tab.
* Kremmu the Warden often drops a level 0 card.
* Fugorg is another named goblin who drops a level 25 card named after him, similarly to Algapa. There are a few goblin archers so this may be a worthwhile location to "camp" if you can not handle Algapa's room yet.
* All goblins in Boarded up Basement have a chance to drop cards, however it can be hard to solo due to high respawn rate and densely populated corridors.

When you are getting started it is recommended to keep in your inventory the level 1,2,3,4 cards so that you can gain several levels as soon as you find the required level 0 card. From there on, if storage is an issue one solution is to drop the cards in a chosen area. They tend to stay on the ground for some time, and once you are in the level 20 range, you will often find cards left behind by other players that you can just pickup and read.
For each level in Goblinese, there seem to be 2 cards of that level. For example: for level 37 there seem to be the Lorga's Calling Card and Larto's Calling Card. For level 38 it seems to be Akogi's Calling Card and Rofok's Calling Card. <br>
For learning each card for the first time will give 50 bonus XP. <br>
Repeatedly reading the same card (if you find it multiple times) only offers very little XP. Cards of level 1 thru 10 only offer 1 XP for repeat-reads. Cards between 11 and 20 offer 2 XP for repeat-reads. And level 21-30 cards seem to offer 3 XP.
* Before the introduction of Serbule Hills, players had to earn all levels of Goblinese in the Goblin Dungeon in Eltibule.

__NOTOC__

Words of Power are randomly-generated sequences of phonemes. (For example, ‘Twimjot’, ‘Fledbydpal’, or ‘Chruggomdye’. They’re gibberish, but not completely random letters, so you can kind of figure out how they would be pronounced.) There are five levels of Words of Power at this time. Each harbors different effects or varying degrees of power for some effects.

Once given a word of power recipe, you have to go into the crafting and lore menu to make the word puzzle. Once you get the letters for the puzzle, write them down. If you don't, when they disappear, you can't bring them up a second time.

To use a Word of Power, type the solution into the chat window (preferably nearby chat /n ). When spoken aloud, the word’s power is triggered, and the word is used up, and replaced with a new word. Words of Power only ever work once.

Power words must be MANUALLY recorded to either the notepad in the quest log or some outside document or is LOST FOREVER! (it is suggested you write it down in the Quest window notepad that way, you can quickly cut and paste it to chat when you are ready to use it).

By design (from Forum post of the Devs), the discovered words are NOT locked per person. A word discovered by one player can be discovered shortly after by another player. When either of the players uses the word, that word will be reset and will not be useable by another player. (It will be lost to the other player).

Hints
Level 0 Words of Power can be very useful to new players. It often produces Teleports, which will save time traveling (even after learning Teleportation, it may be cheaper than using up your Amethysts). Unlike Level 2, which produces lots of questionable effects like Leprosy or Fear of Water ... Level 0 tends to produce mostly useful effects. They are pretty cheap to produce, and the Crab Meat can be processed from Raw Crab without a Cooking Stove nearby (i.e., when you fish crab).

While they are displayed in all caps, they are not case-sensitive.
Quest window
The Quest window actually features three tabs that can be easily missed:

* Quests and Favors: Your typical quest log. As of the alpha it currently does not distinguish completed quests. However, a notification appears on the screen along with a distinctive sound whenever you progress on a quest objective.
* Stuff to Do : Provides a list of objectives with basic hints. This is a nice feature for players who want to try and discover a lot on their own. Note that many of those objectives are out of the reach of a new player and will require some time to complete!
* Notepad : An easily missed feature, the notepad lets you jot down notes in-game. This can be useful to remember Words of Power that you may want to use later, and can be useful to remember key information for several quests. Note that there is NOT a Control-Z (undo) feature, so be careful.

Inventory
The Inventory window can be resized however you want. The size of the items can be changed via Options > GUI and Windows > Inventory Item Icon Size.

As your character grows, you will gain additional Inventory slots through skills like Endurance (permanent), through certain recipes (this appears to be a temporary effect), and sometimes granted by item properties (also temporary).

The Sort option can be useful because the game currently does not allow to reorganize your backpack contents by drag and drop. The sort option will place all combat gear first (armor and weapons), which makes it easier to switch between weapons and armor as you switch between skills. Sometimes it can be useful also to drop items on the ground, then quickly pick them up, as this will move them to the end of the inventory. It is also possible to exchange the position of items, by dragging one item onto another.

The items in your inventory with the red E are the ones that you have currently equipped, items with red borders are quest items.

To drop an item click and drag the item onto the panel below that appears below the inventory. Be aware that any items dropped in this way can be picked up by players nearby!

To split a stack of items left click the item while holding the shift key.

Buying and selling
Press <kbd>shift</kbd> when buying to buy more than one unit of an item at once.

Press <kbd>shift</kbd> when selling to sell a single item instead of the whole stack.

I you go the the Sell-tab for a NPC, you can hover your mouse over the amount of money the NPC has left, to see when the money for that NPC will reset to it's begin amount.

Map
Press <kbd>M</kbd> or use the button on the sidebar to open the map.
The map of the area you are in can be resized.
Currently, not all locations have maps.

You can place markers on the map, for places of interest you may want to remember (this can also be useful for planning a route among multiple mining surveys).
The markers can be renamed or removed by clicking on them.

Grouping
After inviting someone to your group(party) (and them accepting), or after accepting a group-invitation yourself, you can open the Social window, to see who is grouped with you.
This also allows you to see their armor and health (some classes have abilities that allow them to heal other players).

The Chat Window and Commands
Slash commands are typed in the console.
These always start with a forward slash (EG. <kbd>/wiki</kbd>).

Linking items in chat
To link items in chat, simply drag and drop one or more items to the chat window while you have a message typed.

Ghost-chat
To enable ghost chat simply click the little red cross.
That is, click the close button instead of using the chat toggle key.
From there on, the chat will only appear when someone talks, and will disappear again after a few seconds.
In addition, the chat appears somewhat transparent.
It reduces clutter and adds a little to immersion.
You can configure how long the ghost-chat should last in Options > GUI and Windows, along with the transparency level.

Each harboring different effects or varying degrees of power for some effects.

Once you are given a word of power recipe, you have to go into the crafting menu and the lore menu to make the word puzzle.

(suggest to write it down in the Quest window notepad that way, you can quickly cut and paste it to chat when you are ready to use it).

By design (from Forum post of the Dev's), the discovered words are NOT locked per person. A word discovered by one player can be discovered shortly after by another player. When either of the players use the word, that word will be reset and will not be useable by another player.
